A remapping garage in the map pack in five weeks: what we did, what we did not, and what came next

A real account of a new specialist garage's first two months on Google: the numbers, the order of the work, the mistake we nearly made, why reviews became the limit.

Mechanic working in a car engine bay

A one-person remapping and diagnostics specialist near Chester, no website, a Google profile with one review, launched a new site on 22 July 2026. Five weeks later it was third in the map pack for its main money search. Sixty days in, clicks were up 500% on the previous period, 39 of 40 pages were indexed, and the competitive organic search was sitting at position eleven with no clicks yet. This is what that looked like from the inside, including the parts that did not work.

Weeks one and two: profile first

Before the site was finished we rebuilt the Google Business Profile: correct primary category, every service ticked, exact hours, a service area matching where the owner actually drives, photos of real work, the review link on his phone. That, not the website, is what put the business in the map pack. The site went live with a page per service, a page for the home town, and a guides section, all written after a fifteen-minute interview with the owner.

Month one: leave it alone

The hardest part. The temptation is to change titles and add pages every week. We did not. Nothing is judged before it is four weeks old, because Google has not finished reading it. We watched Search Console, replied to reviews, and published two guides aimed at the questions people search before they book a remap.

Month two: read the data, act on it

By week five the data said three things. Eighteen pages were being shown and not clicked: their titles were rewritten. One nearby town had real searches every month and no competitor targeting it: it got a page, written for that town, not copied from the home town. And the home town page was losing to the homepage on every search it appeared for: it was redirected into the homepage rather than left to compete. That last one is the kind of decision most agencies avoid because it looks like deleting work.

The numbers, and what they do not say

Two honest notes. The click-through rate fell, because impressions rose ten times faster than clicks; that is arithmetic, not a problem. And the average position of 35 is dragged down by searches that were never his: Google matches "Chester" inside Winchester and Colchester, which is a third of all impressions and has never produced a click. The numbers that matter are the specific ones: the brand search won outright, the map pack entered, the competitive search at eleven and climbing.

What the limit is now

The map pack he is in reads: leader with 235 reviews, second with 66, him with 11. He has the best rating of the three. Nobody clicks the third pin with 11 reviews when the first has 235, and no amount of website work changes that. So the report said, in one sentence, that reviews are now the bottleneck, and that the 24 people who had already reviewed him on Facebook were the fastest source. That is the whole plan for the next month, and it costs nothing.

The lesson for any garage: the profile moves first and fastest, the pages take a season, and reviews decide the map once you are in it. Do them in that order.

Questions on this topic

Is five weeks typical for the map pack?

For a specialist search in a mid-sized town with a correctly set up profile, it is not unusual. For "MOT" in a city against centres with hundreds of reviews, no. The audit tells you which situation you are in.

Why redirect a page you had just built?

Because the data showed it losing to the homepage on every search it appeared for, which means it was competing with itself. Consolidating the two put the signals in one place. Protecting what works sometimes means removing what is fighting it.

Can I see the real report?

Yes, with the client's details removed. Ask on the quote form and we will send it with your audit.
