"MOT near me": how MOT centres rank for it and what to do if you do not

The specific search that fills an MOT bay, how Google decides which three test centres to show, and the profile, page and review changes that move it.

"MOT near me" and "MOT" plus a town are decided by the map pack, and the map pack is decided by the profile: "MOT station" as a category, distance from the driver, an accurate open-now status, a rating in the high fours with enough reviews behind it, and a page on the site that says MOT, names the town and lists the price. Most test centres get three of those right and never touch the other two.

Why this search is different

An MOT is a commodity with a legal deadline. The driver does not want to read; they want the nearest open place with a good rating and a slot this week. Google knows that, so for these searches it leans hard on proximity, opening hours and reviews, and it shows the map before anything else. Your website matters here mainly as the thing the profile links to and as proof that the MOT page exists.

The profile settings that matter most

  • Primary category. If MOTs are your main earner, "MOT station" (or "Vehicle inspection service" where Google does not offer it) should be the primary, with "Auto repair shop" as an additional. If servicing and repairs are the bulk of the work, the reverse, with MOT as an additional category. We see this the wrong way round constantly.
  • Hours, exactly. If the test lane runs until six and reception until half five, the profile says what a driver can rely on. Set Saturday hours if you test on Saturdays. Set special hours for bank holidays. "Open now" is a top-five factor.
  • Services. Tick MOT, and every service you offer. Google's predefined service list jumped nearly sixty places in the 2026 factor survey.
  • The price. Google lets you add a price to a service. Put the MOT price in. Drivers compare, and a profile with the price gets the click.
  • Attributes: online booking link, payment methods, accessibility, wheelchair access. Small, but they fill the profile and Google rewards completeness.

Reviews, and the pattern that works at a test centre

MOT customers are the best review source a garage has, because there are so many and the interaction is short and mostly positive. The routine is at the desk: when the car passes, the person handing back the keys says the line, and the reminder text that evening carries the link. Two or three a week, every week, beats fifty in January. Reply to every one in a sentence. The rating that matters is the one next to your name in the map, and it moves with the count as much as the average.

The MOT page on the website

One page, at its own address, titled for the search: MOT test in [town], the price, what is checked, how long it takes, retest terms, the booking method, the DVSA authorisation number, photos of the lane. That page is what the profile links to and what ranks under the map for the longer searches: "MOT and service", "MOT retest", "class 4 MOT", "MOT while you wait". Do not put the MOT on the homepage with everything else.

Reminders are marketing

The single most effective thing a test centre can do is the reminder text or email a month before the MOT is due, with a booking link. It is not SEO, but it turns a one-off search into a customer who never searches again. We set it up with the review routine because they share the same moment.

A quick check: search "MOT [your town]" on your phone, in a private window, standing in your reception. If you are not in the three, look at who is: their category, their hours today, their review count. The gap is usually obvious.

Questions on this topic

Should my primary category be MOT station or Auto repair shop?

Whichever earns the most. Google uses the primary to decide which searches you belong in, so pick the one that matches the searches you most want. The other goes in as an additional category; you do not lose it.

Can I show the MOT price on Google?

Yes, as a price on the MOT service in your profile, and on the MOT page of your site. Both help the click. Keep them identical.

We are a test-only centre. Does that change anything?

It helps. "Test only" or "independent MOT" are searches in their own right and drivers trust a centre that does not do the repairs. Say it on the profile and the page.

How quickly can we get into the map for MOT?

If the profile is set up wrong, fixing it can move things in weeks. If the three centres above you have far more reviews, it is a review pace question and takes months. We tell you which in the audit.
