Local SEO for garages: three slots on the map, and how they are decided

Every routine job, the MOT, the service, the tyres, the battery, goes through the map with three garages on it. Google fills those slots from the profile: what it says, what drivers say about it, and whether the business behind it looks real. A garage profile set up once, years ago, by whoever had the login, is the most common reason a good garage is not on the map.

Only want the map fixed? The profile build alone is £200, paid once. What it includes

Three groups of signals

What we set, what we keep set, what we build

Ranked from the 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey (Whitespark, 47 specialists, 187 factors) and grouped the way we work through them. The two biggest movers this year, hours and predefined services, are the two things almost no garage fills in.

What the profile says

Primary category
The single strongest factor. Auto repair shop for a general independent, MOT station for a test centre. Set for what earns most; the other becomes an additional.
Additional categories
Tyre shop, brake shop, car service, auto air conditioning service, auto electrical, wheel alignment. Every true one is another set of searches you can appear in.
Services with prices
Google's predefined service list climbed nearly sixty places in the 2026 factor survey. Tick everything you do; add prices where they are fixed, MOT above all.
Hours
"Open at the time of search" is a top-five factor. Real hours including Saturday, special hours for bank holidays, and the time a driver can rely on, not the time the last mechanic leaves.

What drivers say about you

Rating and count
Scored separately. Three garages at 4.8 are separated by how many reviews stand behind the number.
Recency and pace
A steady flow from the desk beats a burst. Two or three a week, every week, looks like what it is: a busy garage doing good work.
Replies
Every review answered within a day, in a sentence or two, especially the bad ones. Drivers read the replies before they ring.

Evidence the business is real

Pin and address
The pin on the right building. Two units drivers visit means two profiles, each with its own everything.
Photos
Reception, ramps, lane, van, team, taken this year on a phone. Stock showrooms are worse than nothing.
Name, address, phone everywhere
Identical on the site, the profile, the DVSA listing, the booking platforms and the directories. Every mismatch is a small reason to trust the set less.
Citations
Mentions on real directories and garage finders. Less weight for the map than they had; more for being cited in AI answers.

The desk routine

More customers in a week than most trades see in a month, and almost none of them asked

A garage hands back thirty sets of keys a week. That is thirty chances to ask. The routine we set up: the line when the keys go back, the link in the reminder text that evening, a card in the invoice folder, a reply to every review the next morning. No incentives, no gating, no staff accounts, no bursts.

How this runs on a test lane

What a quarter of upkeep contains

  • Categories and services re-checked against Google's updated list
  • Hours and special hours corrected for the season
  • New photos of real work added; old stock removed
  • Questions and answers extended from what the desk gets asked
  • Spam profiles in your area reported
  • Citations checked for a consistent name, address and phone

Where the website fits

The map sends the MOT; the pages send the clutch

The profile links to a page, and Google reads that page as evidence for the profile. A profile pointing at a homepage that says “all makes and models” is weaker than one pointing at an MOT page with the town, the price and the DVSA number on it. Local SEO and the job pages are one system, which is why every tier includes both. The pages side is described on SEO for garages; the tiers are on the pricing page.

Questions garage owners ask us

How long to get into the map pack?

Profile fixes register within a couple of weeks. Whether that is enough depends on the three garages already there. If they have three hundred reviews each the gap is reviews, and that is months of steady asking at the desk. The audit says which.

One profile for two units on the same estate?

Only if it is one business at one address. Two addresses drivers visit are two profiles. Sharing one loses a site its map presence and breaches the guidelines.

Can you recover a suspended profile?

Often, if the cause is fixable: keywords in the name, a wrong address, a hidden address on a shopfront. Weeks, not days, and it needs evidence of the real business. We have done it; we do not promise it.

Do posts help a garage rank?

Barely; they sit near the bottom of the 2026 survey. They help a driver decide once they are looking at you, so we post real offers and real changes, not weekly filler.

A competitor has keywords in their profile name. Copy them?

Report them. Stuffed names are against the guidelines and get suspended when reported. Clearing spam from your area often moves you up without changing anything else.
