Areas we cover

The whole of the UK, one garage per town, checked in writing within a working day

Garage SEO works with workshops anywhere in the UK, from Wrexham, because local SEO is done through your Google Business Profile, your pages and your reviews, none of which need us to be in your town. What limits where we work is not geography but the rule we run under: one garage per town on the Local and Growth tiers, one per specialism where two do not compete. This page explains how a town is defined, how the rule applies to each kind of workshop, and how to find out whether yours is free.

Towns and catchments

What a town means for a garage, and why a specialist is different

A servicing garage draws from roughly the distance a driver will travel to drop a car off and get home without it, which in most of the UK is the town on the profile and its edges. Google draws the same line: the map for “MOT” or “car service” and a town name shows the garages in and around that town, and distance is one of the strongest factors in which three it picks. So for a general garage the unit is the town on your Google Business Profile, and that is what the Local tier protects.

A specialist draws further. A tuner with a rolling road, a detailer offering ceramic coating, a body shop doing restoration work: their customers travel, and the searches are the job rather than the place. For those, the Growth tier protects the towns we build pages for, listed in the audit reply, because that is the honest description of where the work comes from. A mobile mechanic is different again, with no building and a service area set by town, and the protected area is that service area.

In a city, “the town” is not precise enough, and we do not pretend it is. The audit reply states the area in writing, by district or by the map searches that matter, so both sides know what is protected before any money changes hands. The tiers themselves are on the pricing page; what each protects is the same rule read through each tier.

Town or specialism

How the rule applies to each kind of workshop

The rule is by town and by trade, because two workshops only conflict when they chase the same searches. The table says who would clash with whom in one town, and who would not. Each row links to the page for that trade.

Your workshopWould clash withWould not clash with
Servicing and repair garageAnother general garage in the same townAn MOT-only centre, a body shop, a detailer, a mobile mechanic
MOT test centreAnother test centre, or a garage that tests, in the same townA remapper, a body shop, a valeter; a servicing garage that does not test
Remapping and tuning specialistAnother tuner in the same town, or one whose regional catchment overlaps yoursA servicing garage, a test centre, a detailer, a body shop
Detailer or valeterAnother detailer or valeter working the same townsEvery workshop that does not clean cars for a living
Body shopAnother body shop or smart repairer in the same townA servicing garage, a test centre, a tuner, a detailer
Mobile mechanicAnother mobile mechanic whose service area covers your townsA garage with a building in the same town, because the searches differ

Where a workshop does two of these, a garage that tests and remaps for instance, the audit decides which trade it is for the rule, with you. The pages for each trade are under automotive marketing; the map pack itself is explained on the local SEO page.

How the check works

Three steps, no meeting, one working day

  1. 01

Put the town on the quote form

Your garage's name, the town on your Google profile, your website if there is one, and the kind of work you do. The specialism matters because the rule is by town and by trade. It takes about two minutes and needs no meeting.

  2. 02

Within one working day, a written answer

The reply says free or taken, in writing, along with the audit and the quote. If your catchment is wider than one town, the reply lists the towns your tier would protect, so the boundary is on paper rather than assumed.

  3. 03

The town is held by the garage that starts

A free town stays free until someone starts, not until someone asks. If you want to think it over, that is fine; if another garage in your town starts first in the meantime, we tell you so. If it is already taken, we say that and do not offer a smaller share of the same searches.

Nations and regions

England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, from one desk in Wrexham

We are in Wrexham, on the Welsh side of the border with Cheshire, and the one garage result we publish is near Chester. That is where we are, not where we work. The profile, the pages and the reviews are built and read from a desk, and a workshop in Aberdeen, Belfast, Truro or Norwich gets the same audit, the same tiers and the same one-town rule as one down the road.

The differences between regions are real but small: the vocabulary drivers use, the density of competition, and the annual test regime in Northern Ireland, which is run by the DVA rather than the DVSA and changes what an MOT page there says. The audit is written for your town, not for a generic one, and the pages are written in the words your customers use.

What we do not publish

No map of taken towns, and no invented availability

A list of taken towns would name our clients to their competitors, so there is none on this site. A list of free towns would be every other town in the country and would be out of date the day a garage started. Neither helps you, so the check is done by reply, in writing, and it is free.

We also do not tell you a town is nearly gone to hurry you. It is free or it is taken, and the reply says which. If it is free and you want it, the way to keep it is to start; if you would rather wait, the risk is only that someone else starts first, and we would tell you if they did.

Questions about towns and availability

How do you define a town for a garage that draws from twenty miles?

The town on your Google Business Profile is the unit on the Local tier. A garage that genuinely pulls from further, a specialist most often, sits on Growth and the protected area becomes the towns we build pages for, which the audit reply lists. In a city, the area is written into the reply so it is exact.

Can I check several towns at once?

Yes. Put them all on the form and the reply answers each. A garage with two addresses is the Multi-site tier and each address is checked separately, because Google treats them as separate businesses and so do we.

Do you publish which towns are taken?

No, because the list would name clients, and a client's competitor should not learn from our website who is paying for the work. The reply to the form is the only way to check, and it takes one working day.

Do you cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. The work is done through your Google profile, your pages and your reviews, none of which need us in your town, and the search behaviour is the same. The only regional difference we plan for is vocabulary and the test regime, and the audit accounts for both.

Find out whether your town is free

Your garage's name, your town and your website on the quote form. Within one working day: the audit, the three garages above you, the tier that fits, and a written yes or no on the town.
